Protecting the convoy's most vulnerable ships

Walker guarded a rescue ship at the exposed rear of convoy OG 91 and then brought two slow detached vessels safely to Gibraltar.

Notes

For the July 1943 convoy identified as OG 91/KMS 22, Walker guarded the rescue ship at the rear of the formation. Its task required approaching damaged or sunken ships to recover survivors, putting it near places already under attack. Trailing behind the convoy also made it an exposed target. When two vessels limited to 12.5 knots detached for Gibraltar, Walker escorted them alone and delivered both intact. Such assignments helped establish her reputation for getting the ships under her protection to their destinations.
