Before the Norwegian campaign, Walker ran convoy circuits between Liverpool and Gibraltar and worked with the French Navy. She also joined an attempt to rescue survivors from a tanker sunk by a mine laid by U-30. Transferred to the Home Fleet on 8 April 1940, she came under German air attack the following day. During evacuation operations, she ferried troops to HMS Sheffield, which had more room to carry them, while helping defend against further attacks. Her pennant number changed to I27 in May 1940. Walker left Narvik on 8 June as the last British warship to depart, described more tentatively here as the last Allied warship.
