William Denny and Brothers of Dumbarton built HMS Walker. The firm operated from 1840 to 1963 and developed a reputation for solid destroyers that could take damage and continue operating. Other builders placed greater emphasis on speed. V and W orders also went to established destroyer builders such as John Brown, J. S. White, Fairfield, Swan Hunter, Yarrow, and several other firms. Choosing experienced yards suited the Admiralty's aim of producing ships that could serve through the expected postwar construction drought. Walker's later survival after two battleship-shell hits gave Denny's reputation a practical test.
