Uganda survives a Fritz X strike and crosses the Atlantic for repair

Uganda's guided-bomb damage extinguished every boiler fire, yet damage control eventually enabled an Atlantic crossing on one propeller.

Notes

Uganda supported the Sicilian landings and the Eighth Army before providing close gunfire support during Operation Avalanche. A Fritz X passed through seven decks and the keel before exploding underwater. The shock extinguished all boiler fires, killed 60 men, and brought 1,300 tons of water aboard. Damage control under Lieutenant Leslie Reed restored movement on one engine, and the tug Narragansett took her to Malta for temporary repairs. With suitable repair facilities unavailable in the European theatre, she crossed the Atlantic to Charleston using one of her four propellers. During the repairs, her aircraft hangars gave way to radio and radar equipment and additional crew amenities.
