Superb became the modernization candidate that vanished

Superb's wider beam and late-war equipment made her a plausible automatic-gun modernization, but the 1957 defense review ended the opportunity.

Notes

Superb commissioned in 1945 and left service in 1957, giving a nearly new cruiser only a short postwar career. She received British Type 275 radar while scarce American sets went to Battle-class destroyers, major carriers, and Vanguard. Her broader beam made her the strongest Minotaur candidate for three twin automatic six-inch and five twin three-inch mountings. The proposal shows how aggressively the Royal Navy considered adapting existing hulls while testing the next generation of cruiser weapons. The 1957 defense review and the decision to dispose of Superb ended that opportunity before reconstruction began.
