HMS Revenge adapts for bombardment on the Flanders coast

An 1892 battleship gains range through relined guns and deliberate listing, then supports coastal bombardment and aircraft-directed gunfire experiments.

Notes

Revenge relieved the newer pre-dreadnought Venerable in the Dover Patrol after her 13.5-inch guns were relined to 12 inches for greater range. She bombarded German positions off Belgium and withdrew for repairs after an eight-inch shell penetrated below the waterline. The ship also helped develop aircraft observation and correction of naval gunfire. Renamed Redoubtable, she deliberately flooded an anti-torpedo bulge to increase gun elevation during a September 1915 attack on German positions near Westende.
