Penelope ran aground during the Norwegian campaign while hunting German merchant ships. HMS Eskimo took her in tow. Repairs on the Tyne began in August 1940, and trials were completed by August 1941. So much of the lower hull required repair that the ship was described as effectively new below the waterline. She then returned to escort duties with ships including King George V, Duke of York, and Victorious.
