HMS Ocean broadly replaced the retired commando-carrier capability as an LPH, but not with identical survivability or design characteristics.

Question

Was HMS Ocean intended to fill the role of the retired commando carriers?

Short answer

Broadly yes as an LPH, though she differed in design and survivability.

Notes

The role and the platform were distinct. Ocean could embark helicopters and troops for amphibious operations, so she filled much of the practical gap left by the older commando carriers. She was not a direct material copy and differed notably in survivability. The mission continued even though the ship design changed.
