Chapter · 39:47-43:26

HMS Newfoundland from Sicily to Japan's surrender

Newfoundland survived torpedo damage off Sicily, returned for the final Pacific operations, and helped secure Japan and repatriate prisoners of war.

Notes

Newfoundland supported the First Parachute Brigade at Primosole Bridge during the 1943 Sicily campaign. The Italian submarine Ascianghi then torpedoed her, destroying the rudder and forcing temporary repairs at Malta. Later accounts have sometimes misattributed the attack to a German submarine. She jury-rigged sails between her funnels to assist steering by propellers while reaching Boston for major repairs. Returning to service in 1944, she joined the British Pacific Fleet and supported the Australian Sixth Division during the Aitape-Wewak campaign. She then attacked Truk during Operation Inmate, participated in bombardments of Japan, helped take control of Yokosuka naval base, and entered Tokyo Bay for the surrender. Her final Pacific task was repatriating British Empire prisoners of war. After her Royal Navy career, she served Peru first as Almirante Grau and later as Capitán Quiñones.
