Newfoundland's rudder loss, improvised steering, and torpedo accident

Newfoundland survived a torpedoed stern and reached Boston with improvised steering, then suffered another torpedo-related accident after repair.

Notes

Newfoundland supported the First Parachute Brigade during the fighting for Primosole Bridge in Sicily. A subsequent torpedo attack killed one crew member and blew off her rudder. Ascianghi is identified as the attacker, despite contemporary attribution to U-407 in some accounts. After temporary repairs at Malta, she steered by alternating power between her shafts, assisted by jury-rigged sails, to reach Boston Navy Yard. Following her return to service, a compressed-air vessel in a torpedo exploded at Alexandria, causing severe damage and another casualty. The accident delayed her arrival in the Far East.
