Neptune was an unusually apt cruiser name because the god was associated with both the sea and fast horses. The ship carried New Zealand and South African personnel during a career that included South Atlantic service and the Battle of Calabria. She later joined Malta-based Force K in its effort to disrupt seaborne supply to Axis armies in North Africa. Force K had evolved from a heavy anti-raider group built around Renown and Ark Royal into a fast surface force hunting convoys. Its early successes encouraged demands for more ships, but confined-water night raids exposed valuable cruisers to a minefield laid too recently to be known. Neptune's loss shows the risk of committing a scarce station cruiser to an aggressive mission in waters where reconnaissance could not reveal every hazard.
