Lord Nelson and Agamemnon were sent east to help blockade the former German ships Goeben and Breslau, renamed Yavuz Sultan Selim and Midilli in Ottoman service. Lord Nelson accumulated several command titles as the Dardanelles force became the Eastern Mediterranean and then Aegean Squadron without the ship changing station. Their work combined bombardment of Turkish fortifications, support around Gallipoli, and deterrence of an Ottoman sortie. They lacked the speed to chase Yavuz reliably, but their armour and firepower made them credible opponents if the ships had to fight.
