Wartime RNVR officer training at HMS King Alfred

Kennedy's memoir condenses the rapid conversion of a civilian recruit into a naval officer through navigation, weapons, signals, Morse, and field training.

Notes

Kennedy entered the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve through the university recruiting board and reported to HMS King Alfred at Brighton. Because he was still nineteen, he was rated a midshipman rather than a sub-lieutenant until he reached the required age. The course covered rules of the road, navigation, gun drill, torpedoes, depth charges, signalling, Morse code, and field exercises. Its breadth reveals how wartime expansion demanded officers who could grasp shiphandling, weapons, communications, and basic military work in a compressed period. Kennedy's experience gives a contemporary junior officer's view of the training pipeline that fed the rapidly expanding Royal Navy.
