HMS Implacable and the cost of losing naval heritage

HMS Implacable shows what a preserved 74-gun warship could have taught about design, capture, service, and the Napoleonic Wars.

Notes

The former French Duguay-Trouin, later HMS Implacable, was destroyed in 1949 after the British government decided against preserving her. Had she survived, the ship could have shown how France used naval resources during the Napoleonic Wars, the battles one 74 experienced, and the service of a captured vessel under another navy. Her loss illustrates how economy measures and good intentions can erase unique historical evidence. Preserving the ship would have supported education about ship design, operational history, and naval capture.
