HMS Herald as hospital ship, mine-warfare support, and rescuer

Herald's service record shows how survey ships become valuable general-purpose support vessels during crises.

Notes

Herald carried out survey work off Iran before evacuating British and American dependants during the Iranian Revolution. She served under the Red Cross in the Falklands, supported mine countermeasures during the Gulf crisis, located the wreck of HMS Russell, and received survivors from a ferry rescue. In the ferry operation, her ability to receive people extended the effective reach of a helicopter that could not carry the survivors all the way to safety. The sequence demonstrates that endurance, boats, medical space, sensors, and communications give hydrographic ships utility well beyond peacetime charting.
