HMS Gorgon became too wide for Norway's docks

Royal Navy modifications made the former Norwegian monitor too broad for the facilities at its intended operating bases.

Notes

HMS Gorgon had originally been built for Norway, but Royal Navy modifications increased her beam. The resulting ship no longer fit the Norwegian dry docks in the areas where she was intended to operate. Norway therefore faced a warship it could not maintain within its existing support network. Dock compatibility was an acquisition requirement rather than an administrative detail to discover after delivery. A design improvement can reduce practical value when it breaks the relationship between a ship and its bases.
