Furious provided an overlooked foundation for carrier aviation

Furious receives less attention in carrier history than Lexington, Saratoga, Akagi, Ark Royal, the Illustrious class, and the Essex class despite her earlier development work.

Notes

Carrier histories often foreground Lexington, Saratoga, Akagi, Ark Royal, the Illustrious class, and the Essex class. Furious receives less attention even though she was already supporting aviation development before many of those ships had been conceived. Her decks enabled practical work on carrier layouts, continuous operations, night flying, strike doctrine, and wartime employment. She was rarely the most advanced carrier in commission, but for long periods she was the Royal Navy's only or best available experimental platform. That combination of early service and institutional learning makes her foundational importance larger than her later fame suggests.
