Chapter · 45:11-46:04

The best carrier for a mission is the one available

Furious's long usefulness becomes a lesson in force generation: the best theoretical carrier cannot perform a mission if it is sunk, damaged, refitting, or committed elsewhere.

Notes

Furious's survival and repeated employment distinguish the best ship on paper from the best ship a fleet can actually send. A newer carrier may be sunk, damaged, under repair, or already committed to another mission. In those circumstances the available veteran becomes the practical first choice even if her design is less impressive. Furious repeatedly filled that role because the Royal Navy had real tasks and too few decks to reserve her for ideal conditions. The lesson applies directly to force generation and readiness in modern navies as well as to wartime carrier history.
