Chapter ยท 18:12-20:11

Dublin survives U-4 and fights hard at Jutland

Austro-Hungarian torpedo damage and Dublin's fierce Jutland action demonstrate the resilience and combat load carried by light cruisers.

Notes

Hit by the Austro-Hungarian submarine U-4 off Albania, Dublin still made seventeen knots before returning to Britain for repair. That retained speed demonstrates how much useful mobility the cruiser kept after a serious torpedo strike. At Jutland she fired 117 six-inch rounds, helped sink a destroyer, and suffered severe damage alongside Southampton. The action shows that medium warships fought battles as intense as those of the better-known capital ships.
