Chapter · 15:11-16:50

Distributed armour and electrical auxiliaries

Protection varied across the belt, decks, mountings, command position, and bulkheads, while mixed steam- and diesel-driven generators supported the ship's electrical needs.

Notes

Dreadnought's armour varied according to location. The belt, decks, barbettes, turrets, conning tower, and bulkheads each received different thicknesses of Krupp cemented armour, with the figures in the video ranging from less than an inch on parts of the deck to 12 inches on parts of the turrets. The result was a very solid vessel designed to occupy people's minds as strongly as she occupied physical reality. Three 100-kilowatt Siemens generators ran from a changing mixture of steam and diesel engines, showing the auxiliary machinery needed behind the visible guns and armour.
