Chapter · 36:55-39:43

HMS Dartmouth from East Africa to the Adriatic

Dartmouth hunted Königsberg, supported Gallipoli, fought in the Adriatic, and survived a submarine torpedo through determined damage control.

Notes

Dartmouth began the war on the East Indies Station and joined the attempt to contain SMS Königsberg in the Rufiji Delta, where the German cruiser lay too far upriver for direct engagement. The British instead sank the collier Newbridge as a blockship before Dartmouth moved to other assignments. A later detachment sent her after SMS Karlsruhe, but that cruiser had already been destroyed by an internal explosion. The outdated mission shows how incomplete information could shape deployments. Later service took Dartmouth to Gallipoli and Adriatic actions including Durazzo and the Otranto Straits. When UC-25 torpedoed her, volunteers stayed aboard to operate the pumps while tugs brought the damaged cruiser into port, allowing her to be repaired and survive the war.
