HMS Daring's early career shows how many roles a Type 45 could perform despite the class's machinery problems. Commissioning in 2009, entry into service in 2010, and the first Sea Viper firing in May 2011 were separate milestones, with the urgent retirement of Type 42s offered as one explanation for that sequence. Daring deployed to the Persian Gulf in January 2012 and relieved HMS Argyll on patrol. She subsequently led Commonwealth anti-piracy work with RFA Wave Knight, the Australian frigate Parramatta, and Pakistan's PNS Babur, and operated with American carrier strike groups. Her 2013 employment included Five Power Defence Arrangement exercises and the British humanitarian response to Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. Visits to Japan, South Korea, China, Vietnam, Thailand, and Malaysia combined that deployment with defence engagement. Later duties included Aster 30 firing in 2016, Operation Inherent Resolve that September, and exercises with the Romanian Navy in the Black Sea in 2017.
