HMS Cossack's Altmark boarding freed captured merchant seamen

The Altmark incident involved pursuit, close-quarters boarding, and a prisoner rescue that reinforced the Navy's trade-protection role.

Notes

Altmark, the supply ship for Admiral Graf Spee, carried captured British merchant seamen through Norwegian waters before the German invasion. Norwegian authorities said they had checked the ship, while Britain insisted the prisoners were aboard and decided to act. Captain Philip Vian took HMS Cossack into the fjord despite Norwegian objections, resisted Altmark's attempt to force the destroyer against the shore, and sent a boarding party across. The party overcame German resistance and freed roughly 400 prisoners. Coming soon after the Battle of the River Plate, the rescue became a major public event and reinforced the Royal Navy's promise to protect Britain's seaborne commerce and sailors.
