HMS Captain relics and timber reuse

A gun carriage, carved stern work, and reused church timber trace HMS Captain's material afterlife beyond active service.

Notes

After battle service, HMS Captain served as a guard ship at Devonport and left several physical traces. A wooden gun carriage called Queen survives in the Valhalla figurehead collection. A carved Triumph of Arms from the stern rail was sold at Bonhams in London in 2014. Timber from the ship was reused during the rebuilding of St Nicholas Church in West Looe in 1852. These survivals show how a wooden warship could persist through museum objects, the art market, and architectural reuse after the hull itself disappeared. They give viewers concrete places and objects through which the age of sail remains accessible.
