HMS Bermuda from Operation Torch to NATO exercises

Bermuda moved from wartime combat to postwar flagship duties, relief work, and NATO exercises.

Notes

Bermuda supported Operation Torch, hunted U-boats in the Bay of Biscay, and removed X turret during a major refit. She reached Australia in July 1945, later helped recover prisoners, and still faced an attack by Japanese aircraft after the formal end of hostilities. Postwar work included South Atlantic command duties, Mediterranean service, and relief work with Gambia after the 1953 Ionian earthquake. Bermuda retained simpler British tachymetric control for her twin 40 mm mounts while Gambia received more extensive American equipment. The two refits offered a practical comparison of maintainability and performance at sea. Her later exercises involved other Royal Navy units and NATO forces.
