Alternative designs for HMS Agincourt

Competing Agincourt alternatives explore triple 15-inch guns and twin 18-inch guns under counterfactual British technology assumptions.

Notes

The challenge recreates alternatives for the unbuilt sixth Queen Elizabeth, allowing small-tube boilers and heavier guns to arrive early. Drachinifel fits nine 15-inch/42 guns in triple turrets and a 13-inch inclined belt. Clarke chooses six 18-inch/45 guns, 28 knots, and a 16-inch belt, with triple 4-inch mounts and casemate 6-inch guns. The heavier-gun design promises greater range and more damage from each shell. Its six-gun battery offers fewer shells for spotting and target acquisition than the nine-gun alternative. Both ships are game reconstructions of competing interpretations, and the game's technology dates require adjustment to make the chosen guns available.
