Castlemaine avoided scrapping and became a stationary training ship at HMAS Cerberus. An overhaul kept the machinery usable while minesweeping gear, guns, radar, boats, and other operational fittings were removed. Engineering mechanics and shipwrights could work boilers, turn the propellers, handle anchor cable, and use converted workshops and classrooms without taking the ship to sea. A deliberately floodable compartment added realistic damage-control training with darkness, smoke, leaks, and emergency plugging.
