History as lifelong study

School provides a foundation, but understanding historical causes more fully requires continued reading beyond examinations.

Notes

School history can be sound while necessarily incomplete. Examinations impose a practical limit on how far any course can go, and the same selectivity can affect university teaching. Historical understanding grows when people continue studying after the required syllabus ends and follow the connections behind a familiar account. Passion and continued study matter to good historical teaching as well as good historical practice. Classroom time limits therefore explain why learning history remains a lifelong pursuit.
