How historians can disagree over the same documents

The CVA-01 manpower debate becomes a lesson in right of reply, causal sequence, and legitimate disagreement over the same documents.

Notes

Before taking up the CVA-01 dispute, the video sets out a right-of-reply rule: an absent historian should not be made the target of a one-sided argument. Edward Hampshire gives the manpower establishment more causal weight, while the reading offered here places the carrier decision first. Both agree on the government's broader move away from a large carrier navy. The surviving record supports disagreement over sequence because the Royal Navy kept trying to revive the carrier after policy had moved against it, and later personnel cuts made that effort harder. Historians can therefore read the same documents differently without either account becoming a simple factual error.
