Hindenburg’s delay exposes the fitting-out bottleneck

Hindenburg launched before Renown and Repulse but entered service after both, highlighting the importance of fitting-out throughput after a hull reaches the water.

Notes

SMS Hindenburg was launched in August 1915 but did not commission until May 1917. HMS Renown and HMS Repulse launched later, in January and March 1916, yet both entered service during August and September of that year. The comparison isolates fitting-out pace from the more visible act of launching a hull. Turbines, weapons, electrical systems, labour, trials, and supply chains still had to come together before a ship became usable. Britain’s ability to move the two newer battlecruisers through that stage much faster added to the force Germany had to anticipate after Jutland.
