Planned sortie rates must survive maintenance reality

A planned daily sortie total depends on supplies and spare parts that may prove insufficient once sustained operations begin.

Notes

Desert Storm provides a comparison between planned daily sorties and the number actually achieved. Announcing a high sortie target does not establish that it can be sustained for a week. Supply problems can emerge only once the operating tempo rises. A shortage of spare parts can then reduce the number of aircraft available to fly.
