The High Seas Fleet chased ships it could not catch

Scheer pursued Beatty and the Fifth Battle Squadron as the partial victory he had long wanted, but undamaged faster ships could simply draw away.

Notes

Six battlecruisers and four fast battleships looked like the isolated portion of British strength Scheer had hoped to destroy. British heavy fire drove off German torpedo boats before their attack could protect the First Scouting Group. Scheer brought the High Seas Fleet north and turned the action into a stern chase. The central problem remained speed: unless German fire first disabled the faster British ships, they could draw away before the German battle line completed the desired destruction.
