Why high ground is not automatically strong

A deployment decision shows why a conspicuous hill can be weaker than a lower position sheltered from long-range artillery.

Notes

Height alone does not make a strong defensive position. The conspicuous hill offers too little room to arrange the force, and occupying it could encourage a static defense during an offensive battle. The troops deploy behind a shallow depression instead, making them harder for enemy artillery to engage at long range. Elevation matters only alongside fields of fire, cover, room to maneuver, and the force's mission.
