Hermes received the Royal Navy's first generation of post-First World War aviation-fuel management arrangements. These drained petrol back into storage tanks instead of leaving it in distribution lines. Petrol outside controlled storage could feed a fire aboard the ship. The emphasis on draining and containing it followed experience of how severely a fuel fire could damage a vessel.

Draining petrol lines limits carrier fire hazards
Returning petrol to its tanks reduced the fuel left in exposed distribution lines where it could sustain a shipboard fire.
