Henry Percy Douglas brought rare hydrographic knowledge

Douglas's command of tides, seabeds, Dover, and the Mersey made his hydrographic expertise exceptionally useful at the start of war.

Notes

Sir Henry Percy Douglas had served eight years as Hydrographer of the Navy and about six years as chairman of the Dover Harbour Board. He later worked as acting conservator of the Mersey and nautical assessor to the House of Lords. His hydrographic work also extended to the British Graham Land Expedition, which left parts of Antarctica bearing his name. This experience gave him exceptional knowledge of tides, seabeds, and navigation around Dover and the Mersey. Appointed Commodore Superintendent at Dover in September 1939, he died that November before the wartime command could make full use of him.
