Helmet for My Pillow is Robert Leckie's own account of serving as a U.S. Marine in the Pacific. It gives the ground-level experience of a Marine who fought through the campaign instead of a retrospective operational survey. The television series The Pacific appears to have softened parts of that experience for its audience. A later comparison pairs the memoir with Eugene Sledge's With the Old Breed as two strong first-hand accounts.
