The SB2C-3's more powerful engine and four-bladed propeller produced the mature configuration in 1944. Once the design stabilized, production quality improved and the later Helldivers escaped many of the early variant's performance penalties. They served in the Marianas, around Taiwan, Iwo Jima and Okinawa, over the Japanese home islands, and in attacks associated with Musashi and Yamato. They also flew critical patrols between the atomic bombings and the formal Japanese surrender. The aircraft had become useful by the time its specialized dive-bomber mission was losing importance.
