F3 designs change the fleet's gun standard

Choosing F3 designs could encourage earlier modernization around 15-inch/50 guns and change the British force meeting Bismarck.

Notes

Building the proposed F3 capital ships would give the Royal Navy a different incentive to modernize its older 15-inch ships. Adopting 15-inch/50 guns would also require changes to optics and fire control, with bridge, command facilities, and secondary armament receiving attention during the same refits. The Revenge and Queen Elizabeth classes, Hood, Repulse, and Renown could receive different levels of modernization. A common 15-inch standard would also weaken the case for adopting 14-inch guns in the King George V class. Nine 15-inch guns in three triple turrets are the preferred possibility here, although other arrangements remain open. An F3 might then accompany or replace Hood at Denmark Strait, changing the gun power and speed available against Bismarck. This narrower counterfactual is easier to trace than widespread early helicopter adoption, which could change earlier ship losses and subsequent deployments.
