Why hangar size does not determine carrier air-group size

Deck parking and the number of hangar levels can make carriers with similar enclosed hangar space operate very different air groups.

Notes

Carrier air-group size depends on how aircraft are stowed as well as the area inside the hangar. Yorktown and the British carrier used for comparison have relatively similar hangar space, yet their aircraft totals differ substantially because of deck parking. The British example is uncertain between an Illustrious-class ship and Indomitable. North Sea and North Atlantic operating conditions favor keeping aircraft inside. In the hypothetical Incomparable-sized carrier, multiple hangar levels and deck parking could support a larger group, while a single internal hangar would reduce the total.
