Hedgehog versus Squid anti-submarine weapons

Two questions compare contact-fuzed Hedgehog projectiles with the heavier charge and wider lethal area offered by Squid.

Question

Why choose Hedgehog or Squid, and could Hedgehog damage a submarine without sinking it?

Short answer

Hedgehog could damage a target but normally required contact, whereas Squid used a heavier charge with a useful lethal area.

Notes

Hedgehog throws more projectiles, but its relatively small bombs normally need to strike the submarine hull to detonate decisively. A miss therefore produces little effect, and even a hit might damage rather than immediately sink the target. Squid carries a heavier charge whose underwater blast can be lethal without direct contact. It continued a development line that moved beyond the weak early-war Fleet Air Arm anti-submarine bomb toward a weapon with a useful kill zone.
