From captured Hebe to the Leda and Seringapatam classes

The captured French frigate Hebe became a model for decades of Royal Navy construction, including the Leda and later Seringapatam classes.

Notes

Hebe entered French service in 1782 and was captured by the Royal Navy only weeks after completion. British constructors used her as the basis for the prolific Leda class, which included HMS Shannon, HMS Trincomalee, and HMS Unicorn. That design lineage continued into ships completed decades later and into the 46-gun Seringapatam class. Changes in whether carronades counted toward the nominal rating also show why apparently different gun totals can describe very similar batteries.
