Heavy machinery makes colonization an industrial project

Excavators, payload limits, manufacturing tools, and the absence of local labor turn an off-world settlement from a transport problem into a staged industrial program.

Notes

Optimistic colony plans are tested against the size of ordinary construction machinery. A large excavator can weigh about twenty-eight tonnes, and the plant needed to manufacture one is much larger still. Unlike historical trading posts, an off-world expedition cannot hire local builders, so it must deliver or produce the machinery and the skills required to use it. Launch costs and payload classes make repeated shipment from Earth unattractive, while 3D printing still requires feedstocks, large parts, assembly, and repair capacity. The proposed solution is a staged industrial chain in which the Earth-facing Moon builds capability that can be transferred to a Martian moon before heavy equipment descends to Mars.
