Could the Hawker Henley have served as a better naval dive bomber or Fulmar alternative?
Short answerPossibly, because it had Merlin power and greater range, but it was never properly offered or navalized and the Skua already matched the available dive-bombing sight.
NotesThe Henley's Merlin engine, weight, and estimated 830-nautical-mile range compare favorably with the shorter-ranged Skua. It first flew only about a month after the Skua and might have performed the naval dive-bomber or fighter role effectively if adapted for carriers. It could not simply displace the Blackburn design because the Vickers dive sight fitted the Skua while alternatives would require modification. Industrial allocation, equipment integration, and service control could therefore outweigh promising paper performance.
