Why Hawke has so few Royal Navy namesakes

A naval-memory aside contrasts Edward Hawke’s importance with the short and repeatedly interrupted history of Royal Navy ships intended to bear his name.

Notes

Edward Hawke has received surprisingly little commemoration in Royal Navy ship names despite reaching admiral before figures such as Anson and Howe. The last planned HMS Hawke mentioned here was a Minotaur-class cruiser cancelled in 1945, followed by a shore establishment using the name from 1946 to 1955. Anson and Howe, by contrast, gave their names to capital ships. Hawke’s operational importance never produced the same pattern of naval commemoration.
