Haulbowline: enlarging an island for a naval dockyard

The Royal Navy doubled Haulbowline Island to create a repair base, large dock, fuel depot, and hospital in Cork Harbour.

Notes

The Royal Navy established Haulbowline in Cork Harbour during the 1860s as a repair and construction base behind the western approaches. Accommodating the industrial complex required the island to be enlarged to roughly sixty acres, making much of the site artificial ground. Its first major dry dock was about 408 feet long and was extended to roughly 600 feet shortly before the First World War. Plans left room for further growth if larger ships demanded it. A coal and fuel depot and naval hospital made Haulbowline a full support base, illustrating the lengths the Admiralty would take to create strategically placed infrastructure.
