The name honours Harriet Lane, President James Buchanan's niece and official hostess. It passed from the Civil War cutter to a 220-ton Active-class patrol boat that served from 1926 to 1946. Although smaller than the original, the patrol boat still reached 13 knots with five officers and 41 men. The medium-endurance cutter commissioned in 1984 displaced 1,800 tons, made 19.5 knots, carried a helicopter, and had a 9,000-nautical-mile range. Together, the three ships trace changes in Coast Guard hull size, crew requirements, endurance, and aviation capacity.

Three cutters named Harriet Lane
The Civil War vessel, an interwar patrol boat, and a medium-endurance cutter commissioned in 1984 carried the same Coast Guard name on very different hulls.
