The first Hawker Harrier was an experimental two-seat bomber designed to the 1925 day-bomber requirement. Hawker also entered it in the torpedo-aircraft competition against its own Horsley. It needed eighteen minutes thirty seconds to reach 10,000 feet. Its service ceiling fell from 20,000 feet without bombs or a torpedo to 13,800 feet with a torpedo fitted. Those figures show the effect of the naval weapon on the aircraft's available performance.
