Ernest King offered Halsey command of Saratoga in 1934 on condition that he completed an air observer's course. Halsey chose the full naval aviator course instead. He preferred to fly the aircraft himself rather than sit behind a pilot whose actions he could not control. He earned his wings on 15 May 1935 at the age of 52.
