Halcyons and Bangors combined sweeping with escort work

British Halcyon-class and Canadian Bangor-class vessels often served as escorts, with Arctic ships protecting the final approach against newly laid mines and submarines.

Notes

Minesweeper classifications did not confine these ships to one task. Canadian Bangor-class vessels performed extensive escort work, while Halcyon-class ships accompanied Arctic convoys into the approaches near Archangel. There they guarded against mines laid by German aircraft or submarines and also contributed to the convoy's anti-submarine screen. The final leg demanded both specialist sweeping and ordinary escort vigilance. Wartime small ships routinely crossed the boundary between their nominal type and the work a route required.
