During an August action, a shell exploded in one of Haida's gun mounts. It killed two sailors, injured eight, started a fire, and disabled the mount. Haida remained in the line of battle and continued engaging enemy vessels and shore batteries. A major refit followed from September 1944 into January 1945. New radar and other systems prepared her for further operations.
